This simple “remodeling” of a New York City subway map in the 72nd Street station made my day today. It reminded me of what is important in my life and resulted in my New Year’s resolution: to focus my efforts on art and love in 2012. I’ve always been tempted by life’s tangents and as much as this attitude has brought adventure to my life, it has also brought a scattering of energy. This year I am consolidating.

I encourage you all, my dear friends, supporters and lovers, to see the omens, give a little thought to what is important to your life, and to resolve that this year, you will focus on those central people and things. After all, the world might end in 2012 and your soul will kick itself if it didn’t get to the good stuff in time.

Happy New Year to ALL!

Location: Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum,
Duration: November 4, 2011 – January 22, 2012

From a curatorial standpoint, Maurizio Cattelan’s All at the Guggenheim Museum is a masterpiece. I bow down to Nancy Spector, curator of the show, who managed to pull off this novel and seemingly impossible task perfectly. Every piece, most life-size and together totaling over 50 works, hangs from the ceiling or from another piece above it. In addition to what would have been an enormous job to just get these things up there, every piece happens to also be perfectly placed so the observer has an unobstructed (unless intentionally obstructed) view of each work. Pieces even manage to converse with one another across this wall-less space. I laughed out loud when I came upon a bed containing two men fast asleep. The big billboard sign behind them reads: “Qualle sara la mia prossima donna?” (translating to “Who will be my next woman?”). Spector breathed new life into those pieces by creating a relationship between them.

This brings me to my second point: Cattelan’s work is funny, in a good way. It is difficult these days for art to make us laugh. The world of high art often requires a stern observation, but I found myself giggling all the way around the starkly empty spiral floors of the Guggenheim. How can one not laugh at a Hitler down on his knees praying? Or at two cowardly lions peaking from behind a beautiful doorway? There is virtue in laughter, especially when it is not achieved through witty script forced upon a canvas or its substitute.

Lastly, the exhibit is beautiful. I encourage you to stand below the hoofs of the bottom-most piece, a chocolate-colored life-size horse hanging its head and tail as sullenly as they could go. Maybe you too would feel such melancholy if you were weighing down a life-time of work hanging from the ceiling of one of the most spectacular art spaces in New York City.

Although I cannot pry my eyes away, looking directly, deeply, makes me question my understanding of my body as a woman, my role in society, and my status in the universe.

St Art saw much of the same magic in Monosov’s work. Director Serge Trioche supported the Bunny Project and ensured its fruition.

The Process was a long one, taking over a month of work. Rachel modeled for a sculptress every day for almost three weeks and the form came alive in clay.

Supported by a steel form, the details were decided: making the calfs and feet that of a bunny, the size of the ears and the discreet the hairstyle.

Once it was perfect and an exact duplicate of Rachel’s body in every detail, the structure

Once it was perfect and an exact duplicate of Rachel’s body in every detail, the structure was broken apart in order to created the mold that could later be used to create multiple works.

Once the mold was formed and dried, the hollow sculpture was created. Finding and building a pump that would move carrot juice from mouth to anus in an on-going cycle was yet another adventure that is better discovered over a cocktail.

For further information about the artist and about showing this particular piece or another in this same series, please contact info@tincaart.com

CHICAGO – International Beethoven Project (IBP) – the organization that brought the historic and critically acclaimed (Chicago Tribune, New York Times) Beethoven World Premiere to Chicago in 2009 – has again made Chicago its premiere location, this time for its newest project: Beethoven Festival 2011. A radical new vision for presenting culture in both contemporary and historical contexts, Beethoven Festival 2011 is a five-day, multi-disciplinary celebration of the life, works and spirit of Ludwig van Beethoven through music and art. To be presented in spectacular fashion at the edgy and acoustically superb CHICAGO URBAN ART SOCIETY from 4pm until 2am nightly, with many performances broadcast live on Chicago’s 98.7 WFMT radio.

The Festival features 70 musicians–performing over 80 pieces of music from 20 living composers, 12 contemporary artists, 5 filmmakers, 3 scholars, 2 actors and 1 poet. Also featured are twenty new works for piano solo and music spanning 400 years –from baroque to rock, solo to orchestra, with plenty of Beethoven at center. Food and Drink vendors will be on location to allow audiences to enjoy concerts with a glass in hand, in a home-like setting.

President and Artistic Director of IBP, George Lepauw, explains: “Few people get to experience the great master as he should be: a true radical in a radical setting. Beethoven was a rebel who broke all the rules of musical and societal conventions, changing forever the world of art and the rights of the artist. He was the first modernist. Thus we are challenging all the rules of classical music programming, in honor of Beethoven’s spirit of defiance and experimentation, with the goal of inspiring artists and audiences to be fearless, visionary and always hopeful. Ultimately this project is not really about music, or art, but about humanity and bringing people together around memorable and beautiful sights and sounds.”

$9000

ARTIST STATEMENT
The Grosse Fuge grabbed me immediately, contemplative and complex— the qualities of the greatest music, the best art and the most intriguing characters. The piece brought to mind thoughts of liberation versus restraint or, more specifically, liberation within restraint and the reverse. It was with these impressions and much listening that the portraits evolved over several months. It was a pleasure to spend this time with such an intense piece of music and to be rewarded, now, with a visual record of the conversation.
